Ugandan trafficking crisis persists: Ambassador Bigombe reports more cases in Myanmar

Ambassador Bigombe reports more cases in Myanmar

Following the recent rescue of Ugandan nationals from Myanmar, Ambassador Dr. Betty Bigombe reveals that another group of 15 Ugandans has fallen victim to trafficking in the region.

Reports indicate that many of these individuals are being exploited by Chinese and Taiwanese employers, some coerced into rebel activities or fraudulent schemes, while others endure severe mistreatment.

Expressing deep concern, Ambassador Bigombe laments the continued vulnerability of Ugandans to trafficking, despite the harrowing ordeals faced by previous victims.

Survivor’s testimony

Gideon Mwesezi, aged 23, shares his ordeal after being rescued from Myanmar, recounting how false promises led to financial loss and unemployment upon his return to Uganda.

Mwesezi advocates for enhanced government intervention to prevent future incidents, emphasizing the importance of stricter airport regulations and improved oversight of international travel routes.

The experiences of these trafficking victims shed light on the broader issue of inadequate protective mechanisms for Ugandans living and working abroad, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive solutions.
