Calls for release of Dr. Kizza Besigye grow amid controversy

Political figures and celebrities have united with Ugandan citizens in a collective call for the release of veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye. Allegations by his wife, Winnie Byanyima, claiming that he is being held in a military prison in Kampala have sparked widespread concern and demand for immediate action.

Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of UNAIDS, voiced her apprehensions on social media, urging the Ugandan government to release her husband, Dr. Kizza Besigye, from his reported military confinement.

Byanyima disclosed that Besigye was taken into custody while attending an event in Nairobi and is now allegedly detained in a military jail in Kampala.

Byanyima further questioned the legality of Besigye’s confinement in a military facility, emphasizing his non-military background and demanding access for his family and legal counsel to see him. The circumstances of his detention have raised concerns about due process and human rights violations.

Unified voices demand Besigye’s release

Prominent figures like Miguna Miguna and Buhweju Member of Parliament have joined the chorus of voices demanding the immediate release of Dr. Kizza Besigye. Expressing solidarity and concern, political leaders and activists have taken to social media platforms to amplify the call for justice and transparency in handling Besigye’s situation.

Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura highlighted the growing unease among Ugandan activists in Kenya following the reported abduction of Dr. Besigye, signaling a broader regional concern for the safety and rights of dissenting voices.

Former Leader of Opposition in Parliament Winnie Kizza echoed the urgent plea for Besigye’s release, emphasizing the need for swift action in upholding democratic principles and human rights.
