During a Thanksgiving ceremony in Bulindo, Kira Municipality, a joyful occasion took a dramatic turn on Tuesday evening, leading to allegations of an attack on Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, the prominent leader of the National Unity Platform ( NUP ).
While the opposition party claims that Bobi Wine was shot at, the police offer a conflicting account, stating that Bobi Wine stumbled while entering his car, resulting in injuries.
In a recent post on social media, Dr. Kizza Besigye expressed strong disapproval of the incident, denouncing it as “unwarranted police aggression against political opposition figures.
Calls for respect of human rights
Dr. Besigye criticized the Uganda Police Force for their alleged use of Tear Ball Grenades in the incident, emphasizing the importance of upholding human rights and expressing solidarity with Hon. Kyagulanyi for a swift recovery.
Following the Thanksgiving ceremony organized by Bobi Wine’s lawyer, Mr. George Musisi in Bulindo, tensions escalated as Bobi Wine and his team journeyed back home, culminating in a confrontation with the police.
While the police claim that Bobi Wine insisted on a procession despite advice, conflicting reports emerged regarding the cause of Bobi Wine’s injuries, with police asserting that he stumbled while entering his vehicle, while Bobi Wine’s team maintains he was shot.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed that Kyagulanyi received first aid at Najaeem Medical Centre in Bulindo and disclosed the initiation of an investigation to uncover the truth behind the incident, promising a thorough examination of the alleged shooting and related events.
